The Chumash Outreach Group of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara invites proposals from indigenous artists for a permanent outdoor land acknowledgement, in recognition that our campus rests on unceded Chumash land.

As we undertake a renovation of our campus, we recognize that a permanent and visible land acknowledgement will be an important way to honor the Chumash history of this land. Our Unitarian Universalist values call for ongoing work to repair harm as well as to create and nurture relationships of care, mutuality, and equity. We respect the interdependent web of life and work to uphold the worth and dignity of all people. We look forward to working with an artist to bring these values to life.

We are open to working in any medium that is durable, easy to maintain, and suitable for outdoors.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Artists are invited to apply with a Letter of Interest and examples of previous work. After an initial review, selected artists will be invited to discuss the project with the team, review possible locations on campus, and submit a proposal for the final work. A stipend of $300 will be provided for artists at this stage of the work. 

The final project has a budget of up to $20,000, inclusive of all labor and design, construction, materials, and installation. Installation to take place in 2027.
